There’s been a lot of interest about fiber and I was asked how to decide how much psyllium to take.
I prefer a simple end point- you are getting enough when you have at least one good-sized soft bowel movement a day. Be sure to drink plenty of water with and after the psyllium and during the day.
Great – simple – useful! Thanks. Just added some to my routine.
Any comments about husks or seeds? which are better?

The effective psyllium products I’m familiar with are made from husks.

I humbly suggest oat bran or ground flax seeds instead of Psyllium husks. The current understanding on Psyllium is, yes it gives some minor bulk to colon contents, however, gut bacteria cannot ferment it, and create low-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, it is not necessarily healthy for you compared to many vegan choices. If you do not care for oats or flax seeds, a good Hawaiian choice could be one Mango per day.

Each form of fiber has somewhat different benefits. The best is with whole plant foods, getting all the associated nutrients. Fiber choices like psyllium are for those who cannot or will not eat enough whole plant foods. Travelers may find themselves in situations where they can’t get enough fiber filled foods. For someone with hemorrhoids missing a day or two of fiber can be a problem and psyllium is a good stopgap.
